Know when to walk away
And know when to run...
Other than that, the one best thing you can do is to learn and follow the Basic Strategy for Blackjack. If you are new to the game, it is perfectly fine to keep a basic strategy card at hand to check what to do as you go. If you do this perfectly, every hand, you can attain the best odds in the casino.

I enjoy playing blackjack. My tip would be to bet big when you are hot and to know how to manage your bankroll. Otherwise playing by the book seems to be the smart thing to do.
